On Political Correctness

It seems we have moved into a new era where we must walk on eggs lest we offend or exclude someone, somewhere or for something. For example, titles that distinguish between male and female is now taboo, old school, insulting and inflammatory.   I supposed it is all part of the new-age extremely important movement to be politically correct in all things, and, certainly, we are all the better for it. By the way, who gets to decide what is politically correct, what’s right or wrong, what’s good or bad, what’s OK or not OK? Used to be Mom and Dad and my first grade teacher. Who now?

The word ‘Actress’ is out. All performers, male and female, are now called  ‘Actors.’ But I think it is unfair that the male term should survive and the female term erased from memory. I think women should protest this blunder and insist that all performers be called “Actresses.” That’s only fair!

I wonder what is planned for YMCA (founded and in use since 1844) and YWCA (founded in1855). Maybe at the minimum the names should be changed to “Young Male Person’s Christian Association” and “Young Female Person’s Christian Association.” On second thought, we do not want to offend the LGBTQ community so how about just “Young Human’s Christian Association” That would be simpler and catch it all. But then the word “Young” is too arbitrary and is clearly discriminatory. That has to go. Let’s just call it “Any Age Human’s Christian Association.” But wait a minute, those who are not Christians will be offended, so let’s just drop that. We’ll call it “Any Age Any Faith Human’s Association”. Now who could possibly object to that? Well, how about those who don’t profess any faith at all? We can’t just leave them out. So maybe “Any Age Any Faith or No Faith Human’s Association” would be better. Umm, OK, but I still have a problem with the word “Association.” It implies some sort of connection or bonding. No one wants to be bound to others without an in-depth study to ensure there are no offensive connotations implied that might be derogatory disrespectful or exclusionary. So how about “Any Age Any Faith Or No Faith Human’s Faction.”

AAAFONFHF has a nice ring to it.  Just Perfect!

I am relieved we were able to work out that loathsome, thorny issue for the keeper of political correctness – – whoever he, she or it may be.

They should always ask us, the common people, to solve such problems for them.

– – – – Just the  view of a common man.

  1. I love your comments but is love too strong a word. Could someone misinterpret it? I seem to have trouble finding the right words. Maybe I should just not say anything to anybody.
