On January 6th

I hope for the day when every national issue will be looked upon, not as a Republican or Democratic issue, but as an American issue to be evaluated and judged on its own merits. The 2020 election was no doubt controversial to many. For sure there were irregularities, as there always are in virtually every election. I don’t think anybody has incontrovertible data that would erase the 7 million vote margin enjoyed by Joe Bidden. The time for protesting the results ended long before January 6th and focus should have turned towards the next election. It should be our resolve to close any and all loopholes that may exist in the electoral process while ensuring every American citizen, and only American citizens, have easy, unencumbered access to a secure ballot box.

Having said that, it is the constitutional right of anyone or any group to conduct peaceful public protests. But just like every right guaranteed by the constitution, protests must be exercised in a responsible manner. There is a right time and a right place to conduct protests. And that right time and place is not when we are celebrating our democratic freedoms, not when are paying allegiance to our flag, not while honoring our veterans, and certainly not inside our government buildings. The capitol is the heart of the nation. An attack on our highest government institution is an attack on all of us. When we disagree with what emanates from those venerated edifices, our recourse is to find, support and elect representatives who will better reflect our views and our values.

To me, forcefully entering, damaging and desecrating our capital is a serious, even treasonable offence, an international embarrassment, and becomes even more egregious when congress is in session. America must stand together, not only to decry this act but to also deal with it resolutely and harshly. It cannot be brushed off as just overzealous supporters who got a little out of hand. The RNC’s attempt to trivialize this crime against the nation will no doubt weaken its position in the national polls.

  1. Totally agree with this. Unfortunately, there are too many Trumpsters who are not common men/women. And, certainly almost all elected Republicans in Congress that are not common also. And, this is coming from a registered Republican who wishes we would go back to Republican values, such as a balanced budget.
