On the West Bank

While the world is focussed on the Gaza war, too little attention is afforded events unfolding in the West Bank. There is a very clear and determined movement to further intimidate Palestinians “to find other more accommodating countries to live in.” Settlers, with Israeli government tacit approval, are widening their illegal settlement footprints, encroaching further on the already truncated Palestinian land. Meanwhile, the IDF is gunning down ‘suspected’ militants, destroying homes and decimating whole towns.

The dire developments in Gaza and in the West Bank are compounding the sense of utter desperation and hopelessness. There are only two avenues open to people facing this dilemma; accept whatever befalls them and suffer in silence, or to fight back any way and any time they can. More and more Palestinians are choosing the latter and their numbers are growing. When one has lost close family members, homes they have struggled to build, basic God-given freedoms, and opportunities they see the rest of the world enjoying but denied them, that is the perfect storm for the Samson Syndrome – – – living only to extract revenge on your tormentor at  the cost of your own life.

We, in the so-called ‘civilized’ world, should never, never allow, let alone, in any way, enable, things to reach that level of desperation for anyone anywhere.
